Scene Analysis

Scene Analysis on 8 Mile:

*First Battle-Til Rabbit Getting The Bus Home*

In this scene, we see a lot of symbolism. For example, at the start of the scene we get a shot of a close up of "Papa Doc's" lower face so that we are able to focus on the mic. The mic represents hip/hop and mcing, as this is what the crowd are there for. The lighting is dark and consists of green and black.

We then get close-up of dj decks, which symbolise music. As each rapper is coming onto the stage we get a medium close up shot of them walking up to the stage. We get numerous shots of the crowd, mainly consisting of ethnic miniorites which you don't usually see in many films. Suspense builds up as to who will win this battle.

The crowd at the end cheers for "Lil Tic" who wins the battle over "Rabbit" as Rabbit chokes on the mic. The crowd boo's for Rabbit but cheers for Lil Tic. Rabbit is also the only significant person there who is not a ethnic miniority, which brings the attention to him. As usually, the attention is mainly on the ethnic minorites as there is not many.

The scene ends with different angel close ups of Rabbit representing him as confused and worried. His body language and facial expression show how worried and nervous he is. With the crowd booing in the background and the dark colours representing negative themes.

The language in this film is slang and during the rap battles a lot of swearing takes places.
